Be a Santa Claus for an Omaha Senior

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – 2020 put a heavy strain on residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

A well-known program called “Be a Santa Claus for a Senior” is back this year and seeks to bring vacation joy to seniors in need.

“It’s a program we’ve been looking forward to for several years,” said Tim Shanahan, general manager of Home Instead.

The program offers seniors gifts in assisted living facilities during the holidays. With many seniors in quarantine due to the pandemic, the home is instead trying to help isolate them.

“We always try to fight social isolation,” Shanahan said. “This is a big deal for us at home. And this year you obviously have seniors who are in quarantine for a very long time trying to get well. And it would be nice for her to get a taste of the holidays. “

The process is simple. You can find Christmas trees in several local Hy-Vee stores. Just take one of the paper ornaments from the tree, purchase the gifts, and bring them back to the Hy-Vee store unpacked.

Most seniors are looking for simple gifts.

“Like on this card here,” said Shanahan. “We have white socks, medium drawstring sweatpants, and some gloves. All you really need is the essentials, this is really what you are looking for. “

Shanahan said your help is needed to help seniors feel connected and loved during this challenging year. More than 600 seniors are taking part in the program this year, which runs through November 29th.
