How deep can we go Collect cold stats for Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – We are currently in a long period of freezing temperatures, and the coldest air is yet to come. Sunday and Monday temperatures may not reach zero and trigger First Alert Days.
How is this current explosion in the Arctic compared to before?
Firstly, for reference: our “normal” high for this time of year is in the mid-30s, our “normal” low falls in mid-teens. Of course, there is nothing “normal” about the persistent cold temperatures that we have in our forecast.
The coldest recorded temperature for Omaha was -32 ° on January 5th, 1884.
The coldest HIGH ever recorded was a whopping -14 ° on February 8, 1899.

RECENT ARCTIC BLASTS
Most recently we reached a daily record low of -20 ° on New Year’s Day 2018. The day before, December 31, 2017, Omaha had a cold record high of -1 °.
The brutal winter of 2009/10 brought a fair amount of cold temperatures, including another low of -20 ° on January 4th.

Cold temperature strains
Living here in the middle of the country can handle a few cold days from time to time. However, it is the long stretches of arctic air – like the one we are in right now – that are so brutal and dangerous.
Omaha stayed below zero for four consecutive days in February 1936. In the same winter we had a 16-day temperature stretch below 20 °.
I mention the second statistic as we are on the right track with our current forecast of staying below 20 ° for more than 13 consecutive days (February 6th to 18th). We’re also well on our way to one of the ten coldest February Omaha has ever seen.

It is noteworthy that these figures are actual air temperature values, not wind chill. Limit your time outdoors for the next week and educate yourself about those most at risk.
