Man charged with shooting the death of a sex offender in Omaha

An Omaha man was charged with the murder of the death of a registered sex offender.

James Fairbanks, 43, was charged Thursday with first degree murder and the use of a gun to commit a crime in the death of 64-year-old Mattieo Condoluci. He was being held without bail.

Condoluci’s body was found Saturday after officials responded to reports of a shooting.

Authorities said Fairbanks wrote an anonymous email to the Omaha news media saying he shot Condoluci for being a sex offender.

Condoluci’s name was on the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry, which listed offenses in Florida and Nebraska.

Fairbanks has received online support from Condoluci’s daughter and mother of a boy, among others. Condoluci was convicted of molestation in Florida in 1993, The Omaha World-Herald reported.

Douglas County’s assistant prosecutor Brenda Beadle said the law does not allow vigilante justice.
