OMAHA – An Omaha man was charged with the murder of the death of a registered sex offender.
James Fairbanks, 43, was charged Thursday with first degree murder and the use of a gun to commit a crime in the death of 64-year-old Mattieo Condoluci. He was being held without bail.
Condoluci’s body was found Saturday after officials responded to reports of a shooting.
Authorities said Fairbanks wrote an anonymous email to the Omaha news media saying he shot Condoluci for being a sex offender.
Condoluci’s name was on the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry, which listed offenses in Florida and Nebraska.
Fairbanks has received online support from, among others, Condoluci’s daughter and mother of a boy. Condoluci was convicted of molestation in Florida in 1993, The Omaha World-Herald reported.
Douglas County’s assistant prosecutor Brenda Beadle said the law does not allow vigilante justice.
