Man posted in Omaha jail fires gun, injures himself
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A man admitted to Douglas County Jail fired a gun that officers discovered during a patrol search and wounded himself, says the county Department of Corrections director.
Department head Mike Myers said in a statement that the incident happened on Sunday night when Omaha police officers tried to take the man to jail. After the gun was discovered during the strip search, the man threatened the correction officers and staff with it and then fired.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that the person was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and no other people were injured.
The man was identified as Brandon Jennings, 22, from Omaha on Monday.
Myers said his agency and local police were analyzing the shooting “to make sure we never repeat the incident”.
