Maverick Food Pantry helps staff and students in need – Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha, Nebraska (KMTV) – It’s hard to tell when you’re hungry or worried about where your next meal is coming from.

According to a survey by Chegg, 35% of college students say hunger will at some point affect their ability to learn.

“I didn’t have a car or a family, so I could walk from the dorm to this building so I didn’t have to worry about going to Wal-Mart or the grocery store, and I got what I needed. “That was it,” said student Jenika Jennings.

Located in a room in the University of Nebraska Omaha Community Engagement Center, the Maverick Food Pantry is a resource that made a huge difference between staff and students like Jennings.

“I know one of my favorite dishes was macaroni and cheese, corn and chicken,” Jennings said.

“I think it’s really hard for students and the academic staff too, isn’t it? Not all of us are paid that well, ”said UN official Erin Painter.

The painter said the pantry was especially helpful during the pandemic.

“My partner is making or losing money, but I’ve been able to take that pressure off a little,” says Painter.

Pantry focuses on providing a healthy and balanced range of food as well as products for personal hygiene.

What Students and Staff Can Do Online Register Receipt of the item is confidential.

They fill 20 to 40 bags a week, and each user can get two bags a week.

“Many of our users have different needs. We have food insecurity on this scale and not many people think about it, ”said pantry coordinator Madeline St. Clair.

One of her fondest memories of working there was that there was an international student who could try something new.

“One day I wanted this show, but it was a touch of Reese. He said, “Oh, let’s do it. He said, “Oh, American food.” When I tried it, I came back the next week and thought, “I’ve found a new favorite food,” said St. Clair.

St. Clair believes the pantry is an on campus resource and should not be used by anyone who is ashamed.

“We’re here, you know. It doesn’t have to be too small or too big for us, ”said St. Clair.

Maverick Food Pantry not only serves the UN campus. UNMC, St. Mary’s University employees, students, faculty and staff, and students affiliated with Avenue Scholars can sign up to receive the package.
