The summer holidays are here – finally!

If you’re like most of the Mavericks, then you’re already planning your events and activities for the summer. Maybe it comes down to taking a dip in the pool once a week, hitting the trails often, gardening, participating in outdoor sports leagues, and generally enjoying more time outside.

Summer tips

Also, if you are planning to spend the summer, make sure that your health and safety come first. The Nebraska Medical UN Health Center gives some simple tips.

Avoid exposure to heat

Check the heat recommendations before going out. Limit the outside time in extreme temperatures. If you are outside and you start to overheat, sweat excessively, tachycardia, weakness, dizziness, headache, or nausea, move to a cool place immediately. Have some cold water and turn on the fan or air conditioner nearby. If you notice any signs of heat stroke, call 911.

Protects your skin

Regardless of skin color, everyone is at risk of exposure to sunlight and skin cancer. If you plan to go out for more than 5 or 10 minutes, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to ensure your safety. Remember to apply it to all exposed areas of skin, including the face, neck, and ankles. Please repaint often.

Avoid insect bites

If you go outside, use an insect repellent with 20% to 30% DEET. Spray on all exposed skin and clothing. Make sure you apply it after the sunscreen is dry. If you plan to hike at night or in wooded areas, wear clothing that covers your skin as much as possible and closed shoes instead of sandals.

For painful bites like bee stings, take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. For itchy bites, apply an ice pack and a commercially available antipruritic cream such as hydrocortisone.

Continue hydration

Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Drink water all day. It’s the first thing to do when you wake up and one of the last things to do before starting your nighttime routine. Try to drink at least two-thirds of your body weight in ounces daily.

Alcohol and caffeine can quickly lead to dehydration on hot days. Limit these drinks and choose as much water as possible. When the water is dull, consider adding cucumbers, lemons, and fruits to the water to give it another natural taste.

Ride a bike and skate safely

Before going out, wear appropriate protective equipment such as a suitable helmet, wrist protector, knee and elbow pads, and closed-toe shoes. Choose a safe place to drive, e.g. B. a skate park or a trail. Never ride on the road or in the rain. If you go out at night, wear reflective clothing. When skating, make sure your hands are not on the board. Accidentally rolling your hand can cause serious damage.

Swim safely

Do not swim alone. There is always at least one companion. Studies have shown that alcohol is a leading cause of most water recreation-related deaths. Therefore, avoid drinking alcohol before and during water activity.

Handle minor cuts and abrasions

Wash your hands with soap and water and wash the cuts to avoid infection. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Apply petrolatum or an antibiotic ointment to the cut and cover it with a sterile bandage. If the cut is swollen or painful, take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Be careful around you

The weather is nice so be careful of your surroundings when you go out. Put your phone down, skip your headphones, and stay vigilant as you walk.
