North Omaha neighborhood calls for peace after the double homicide

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A neighborhood in northern Omaha calls for peace after a double homicide.

“A change of heart. A change in the violence we do against friends, neighbors and loved ones,” Father David Korth said Thursday evening at the prayer service at Sacred Heart Church on 22nd and Binney Streets.

Shamika McCoy is far too familiar with the violence he addressed. “Every time I experience it, it’s like you’re living that moment, but you are also experiencing moments from the past so you can never heal,” McCoy said outside the church. She was 16 years old when she lost her first family member to a gun. last summer her cousin Larry Johnson-Tiller.

“You drive by and say good morning cousin and it’s difficult to get on with your day,” she said, referring to the monuments that are still standing next to the church. She has lost several relatives to gun violence. “So when you hear about it saying, ‘Oh my God, this is going to be someone I love,” McCoy said, noting scenes like the one Thursday night at Sacred Heart Church that gives her hope.

“Just like when Larry was murdered, the school reached out to you,” she said, referring to the Sacred Heart Elementary School next to the church. “Our school is a close community, so more like a family.

“There are people who take care of it. There are people who want to see a difference and it’s just about us all coming together, ”said McCoy. “Anyone who wants to see a difference and strive to make it happen.”

Never forget what has already been lost. “You can never replace what someone, what I, what he has lost, what can you say, what can you do?”

Gun violence in northern Omaha increased in 2021 compared to the previous year. As of March, 14 people were injured in 11 shooting events in the area, including four murders.

Sacred Heart Church will hold a second prayer service on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and the church says everyone is welcome. The service will also be broadcast live on the church’s Facebook page, where more than 1,200 people watched the service on Thursday evening.
