Omaha Catholic leaders say all COVID-19 vaccines are “morally acceptable”.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Catholic leaders renew the call that it’s okay to get the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

While Moderna and Pfizer are preferred, nobody seems to have that luxury.

This is not a new debate. The problem of vaccine testing and manufacturing was compounded this week after the Archdiocese of New Orleans called Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine “morally compromised.”

The Archdiocese of Omaha is made up of 235,000 Catholics and includes the Omaha Metro and 23 counties in northeast Nebraska.

However, it has been clear to the Vatican since November that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson is morally acceptable.

“Receiving this vaccine does not mean support for abortions,” said Dr. Steve Doran.

Dr. Doran is a bioethicist, member of the COVID-19 Task Force and advisor to the Archdiocese of Omaha. Many vaccines have used aborted fetal cell lines in their research and production process for decades.

“The cell lines were made from a single tragically aborted baby decades ago, and I don’t want to minimize that. It’s tragic. It is not that cells are constantly being produced that rely on a woman to abort and provide cells. That’s not how it works, ”said Dr. Doran.

Pfizer and Moderna used the cell lines in testing and Johnson & Johnson is the production.

“The vaccines do not contain any fetal tissue. People don’t have to worry. You won’t get any fetal tissue, ”said Dr. Doran.

In a perfect world, experts say the moral choice is to choose the vaccine with the most distant connection to evil. But because demand now outweighs supply, neither of us has the option.

“There is no conflict with science and belief here. We find ourselves in a situation where we are forced to interact with evil in some way and how close we are – even though we are morally opposed to abortion – so far removed that, given the severity of the pandemic, we choose to accept that. But under protest, “said Dr. Doran.

Without having to choose our vaccine, the Vatican stresses that you can get any of them with a clear conscience and that does not mean that you are okay with an abortion.
