Omaha Mall Shooting: 2 people arrested in Nebraska after fatal attack
Filming took place on Saturday at the Westroads Mall in Omaha. Trequez Swift, 21, was killed. Ja’Keya Veland, 22, was injured and is expected to survive, police said.
A 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder and an 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting a murder, police said.
“The investigation shows that this was an isolated incident and not an accidental attack,” said Omaha police.
The shooting took place around noon, Lt. Neal Bonacci. Security footage showed two suspects escaping the mall.
Bonacci said the shooting was not an active shooting situation, but the department treated it as such as a precaution.
Mall customer hid in a bathroom
Client Celia Davis said she and her 3-year-old daughter were dragged into a bathroom with about 10 strangers and were waiting for help, CNN subsidiary KMTV reported.
She texted her mother and boyfriend “I love you” while hiding, she said.
“I was shaking and (my daughter) kept whispering to me, ‘Mom, I want to go home’ and I said, ‘I know we’re going home.’ And finally the cops came and got us, “said Davis.
Previous shootings at the mall
Westroads Mall had another episode of violence last month when a police officer was shot four times on March 12 while responding to a shoplifting phone call. The officer survived. The mall was also the site of mass shootings in 2007. 19-year-old gunman Robert Hawkins killed eight people and then died by suicide, CNN previously reported. Five other people were injured in the shooting.
