Omaha man hands out stimulus check on electric scooter now missing from home in Dundee
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A man in the Dundee neighborhood spent his stimulus check on a new electric scooter, only to find he was missing from his yard weeks later.
Mike Thompson believes someone stole it either late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. He hoped it was just an April Fool’s joke. He tried to keep the scooter out of sight by covering it with a black cover under its quarterdeck.
“On my morning walk with my dog, we came down the sidewalk and I saw the blankets,” Thompson said. “I knew something was wrong because I put stones on it so it wouldn’t fly away.”
When the cover blew in the wind, the newly purchased Pride Mobility scooter was gone. Thompson says he had it for three weeks that he bought with his latest stimulus check.
It replaced an old scooter – about twenty years old, out of date and unreliable. The same condition describes Thompson’s knee after a career as a roofer.
“You don’t get any parts for [the scooter] because it’s so old, ”said Thompson. “I had the opportunity to get a new one and I got it, but it was long over.”
Thompson says he is so disabled that he can no longer work. He can only comfortably walk within four or five blocks of his home. He can walk up and down the street with his dog and go to his nearby pharmacy, but says that getting groceries isn’t that easy without his bikes.
He hopes the scooter will find its way back to him.
“That would be the ultimate” [hope], but I don’t expect it to be found, ”Thompson said.
He admits he doesn’t have a serial number for the blue scooter he bought used. He’s hoping someone will spot it with its reflectors and broken front corner wherever it is.
“I just want my scooter back,” Thompson said. “My dog is confused because we no longer go to the park. We can’t run that far. “
Hopefully his scooter isn’t far either.
Thompson says he speaks to the Omaha police. He will try to take the bus or have friends, one of whom organized a fundraiser, to buy a new scooter and some sort of security for it.
