Omaha Mayor Stothert’s re-election campaign was suspended after the man’s death

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A spokeswoman for Mayor Jean Stothert said Monday afternoon that after the death of her husband, Dr. Joe Stothert, temporarily suspending all campaign activities.

Dr. Stothert was found dead on Friday in the family home in southwest Omaha. Authorities said he was found alone and no foul is suspected.

The mayor’s office made the following statement on Monday:

“Out of respect for the life and legacy of Dr. Joe Stothert and to properly honor his memory, Jean Stothert’s campaign for the mayor has temporarily suspended all public contacts and activities.”

Stothert officially stood for re-election in January. Her campaign had planned to start broadcasting television commercials on Monday.

The Stothert family asked for privacy.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

The candidate Mark Gudgel released a statement on Monday announcing that his campaign would also stop activities “out of respect for the Stothert family”.

“The city mourns the loss of Mayor Stothert and her family when they hear about the tragic death of Dr. Stothert mourn.

Life is sacred. Out of respect for the mayor and her family, we have decided to temporarily stop our campaign activities.

This is not the time for politics, this is the time for leaders to do the right thing and show compassion. “
