The North Omaha store is hoping for new neighbors

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A North Omaha store owner had the only store open on a section of North 24th Street for several months.

He thinks that will change. Don McPherson and wife Yvonne have owned and operated their Styles of Evolution fashion store in North 24th and Ohio for 16 years.

McPherson has weathered a pandemic and previously handled major construction work in the area.

“I think when they ripped open the road out here, Yvonne and I, oh, we lost about $ 80,000.”

But the couple’s biggest challenge was running this business on an island. There are no retail stores, no restaurants anywhere else on the block.

“Well it was tough. In retail, you have to have pedestrian traffic, and pedestrian traffic is what really makes businesses profitable. “

According to McPherson, loyal community and out-of-town customers are helping keep business going, but help is on the way.

The retail space in the block has been refurbished and McPherson will temporarily move from his premises to one of the refurbished units while his shop is also being set up.

He will move back into his room and hopefully new neighbors will fill the block.

“They’re trying to fill these other bays and that’s the whole scheme of getting customers into these buildings and we believe this will bring the kind of pedestrian traffic we’re looking for. That everyone can be successful. “

Waiting for this area to grow, the McPhersons never gave up and now believe the wait will finally pay off.

“We were determined to be part of this community.”

McPherson says the owners of the units discussed with business owners interested in moving to the area.
