YOU Hockey beats Omaha and advances to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semi-finals

The University of Denver ice hockey team will live one more day to play.

Bo Hanson deflected Connor Caponi’s shot 5:03 in front of Omaha goalkeeper Isaiah Saville, and the pioneers with the fifth seed beat the quarter-finalists 5-4 in Grand in the quarter-finals of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff on Saturday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Forks, ND

Omaha led 3-1 late in the second phase of the win-or-go home affair before Bobby Brink’s one-timer went 3-2 on a DU powerplay. Mike Benning followed with two back-to-back goals to give DU a 4-3 advantage at 8:07, but Omaha responded with a goal of their own to set up Hanson’s game winner – his first goal as a Pio in his first game forward.

Pio’s goalkeeper Magnus Chrona had 24 saves, 17 of them in the third half. Hank Crone had the Pios’ other target while Guttman had two assists. Denver overtook Omaha, 38-28.

The Pioneers will face either North Dakota No. 1 or St. Cloud State No. 2 in the semi-finals on Monday.
